Port Adelaide’s Enfield Council now has waste management by-laws which emphasise the importance of proper bin placement.
They say that residents bins should be put out no earlier than 4 PM the night before collection and brought back in no later than midnight the following day.
The council’s crackdown has seen a number of residents receive warning letters, while an unlucky bunch of others have faced a hefty $312 fine for noncompliance.
A council spokesperson explained that fines are a last resort, stating, “Residents can be fined for leaving their bins out, but this only happens after repeated warnings.”
With over 200 complaints about bins left on the streets each year, it’s clear that this issue is top of mind for the community.
Interestingly, in the last five years, the council has issued only four fines after numerous warnings.
While the $312 penalty may seem steep, it may reflect how seriously the council takes any breach of their by-laws.
