Star rower Katrina Werry was last night crowned the Ballarat Sportsmen’s Club ‘Sportsperson of the Year’.
Werry has now picked up the gong four times, first winning it in 2017, and is now fast gaining on six-time winner marathon champ Steve Moneghetti.
Werry has been a permanent member of Rowing Australia’s elite Women’s crews for the past decade and has earned selection for Australia to compete at the Olympic Games (2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris), Rowing World Championships and World Cup regattas, throughout her stellar international career as an elite athlete.
In 2024 at the Paris Olympic Games, Werry’s Australian Women’s Eight crew, finished in 4th place, narrowly beaten for the bronze medal by just one second.
However, in the lead up to the 2024 Olympics, Werry and her Australian Crew won the World Cup III in Poznan, Poland, in the Women’s Eight, finishing in first place and securing the gold medal.
Last night’s ceremony at the Ballarat Golf Club also saw Aussie cricketer Matt Short picked up the Hollioake Medallion with Sara Kennedy taking out the Junior Sportsperson award.
