Top cop left disappointed with Ballarat’s crime rise

Ballarat’s top cop says he was disappointed to see a rise in criminal incidents across Ballarat to the end of 2023.

Data from the Crime Statistics Agency shows a rise of close to 9% with stealing from a motor vehicle still the number one offence.

Acting Superintendent, Ben Young, says any rises can be disappointing, given the significant work police members do.

“Our members are out there patrolling 24/7 to detect and deter crime, so when we do see those rises, it can be concerning,” he said.

“I think it’s important to look at the fact that it is a gradual rise as we move back to those pre-pandemic levels.”
