If you’re thinking of running for council in Ballarat or nearby shires you better get your skates on with nominations closing on Tuesday.

If forecasts are right, this election will see female councillors make up half the numbers statewide, that’s up from 34% back in 2012.

Kelly Grigsby CEO of the Municipal Association of Victoria says Ballarat’s change to nine single councillor wards will shake things up.

“Look, I think it will change the dynamics certainly.”

“I think we’ll see that play out across communities where those changes have occurred.”

“That’s why we’re really encouraging people to not rest on their laurels, really think about how you can stand for council and really make a difference,” Grigsby said.

In related news, one of Ballarat’s highest profile former sports stars is having a tilt at council.

Ray Borner is putting his hand up for the Golden Point ward.
