A senior staffer at the RACV says policing to catch drink drivers in regional areas of the state, such as Ballarat, needs to be ramped up.

The motoring organisation says drink driving remains one of the most significant contributors to Victoria’s road toll with around one in five drivers who lost their lives on state roads since 2023 having a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05 or above.

RACV Head of Policy, James Williams, says more enforcement is needed.

“The penalties themselves seem about right, RACV certainly supports penalties for drink driving, they simply don’t mix.”

“The issue now, or the challenge, is enforcement.”

“We’re not seeing necessarily enough drink driving and drug driving enforcement in Victoria, particularly in regional areas,” Mr. Williams said.

The state government introduced new penalties for drink drivers in October last year.
