An environmental group that usually focuses on the platypus is looking out for Lake Wendouree’s native water rat, the rakali.
Geoff Williams from the Australian Platypus Conservancy says the lake lighting project could impact the mainly nocturnal animal.
“There is the potential for them to be impacted,” said Mr Williams.
“One of the problems rakali face is predation from things like foxes and cats, and whenever you have an increase in lighting in an area it therefore just increases the predation risk of all those sorts of animals,” he said.
The Lake Wendouree lighting project will see 225 light poles installed around the lake as well as Victoria Park.
