More than 5,000 households around Ballarat have signed up for a soft plastics kerbside collection program, as the 12-month pilot reaches its half-way point.

Since the launch of the pilot in Victoria, over 16,000 kilograms of soft plastics, including bread bags, chocolate bar wrappers and cling wrap, have been diverted from landfill across the City of Ballarat and another participating council area.

The recycled soft plastics will be turned back into packaging or other products.

With space for 10,000 households, Deputy Mayor of Ballarat, Ben Taylor, is encouraging more people to sign up to the trial.

“It is an opt-in project, so what we’d love to see is more people get involved because the number one thing in this project is the removal of soft plastics from landfill, and this has made a big difference to that,” he said.

To register for the soft plastics kerbside collection pilot, go to the City of Ballarat website.
