Commerce Ballarat has released the results of its recent business sentiment survey, and it makes for grim reading.
98 businesses responded, with the cost of operations and low sales cited as the main business challenges in Ballarat.
An average rating of the last six months in the city was just 2.4 out of 5.
CEO of the organisation, Jodie Gillett, says business conditions are placing an enormous amount of pressure on businesspeople and their families.
“We asked, ‘will you be around in three months, six months, twelve months, two years,’ and there’s a number who are saying they don’t think they’ll last three months, they don’t think they’ll last six months,” she said.
“They’ve eaten up all their savings [and] they’re down to week-to-week.”
