Millions expected to be spent on burying Ballarat’s rubbish

Ballarat councillors will be asked to sign-off on an eye watering amount of money tomorrow night, just to bury our rubbish.

Council officers have recommended $2 million be spent on landfill capping, which involves placing a cover over waste to isolate and avoid the spread of contaminates, with Shamrock Civil set to get the job.

Ballarat Regional Landfill’s existing cells are almost at full capacity to accept waste, with an EPA licence condition stating final capping of cells must be complete within 2 years of the cell becoming full.

The total budget for stage 2 (parts A and B) of the capping construction project is $4.2 million.
