A man has died after a horror rock fall at the Ballarat Gold Mine yesterday afternoon, police have confirmed.
The mine collapse occurred just before 5pm, approximately 3 kilometres underground from the mine’s entrance.
Two people were pinned by fallen rocks, whilst another 28 took refuge in a safety pod and were brought to the surface late last night.
One of the pinned workers was freed at around 8:30pm last night and sustained life-threatening injuries.
The 21-year-old local man was airlifted to a Melbourne hospital in a serious condition.
The body of the second man trapped, a 37-year-old Bruthen man, was recovered this morning.
Members of WorkSafe will investigate the incident while police prepare a report for the coroner.
