Lydiard Street railway gate return supported by state opposition

Despite the State Government saying the historic Lydiard Street railway gates can’t be put back for safety reasons, the State Opposition says it can be done.

In May of 2020, a train slammed into the wooden gates, which led to them being put into storage.

Electronic boom gates were instead installed at the crossing.

Following community feedback last year, Member for Wendouree, Juliana Addison, says they’ll be put back, but as static gates only.

However, the Shadow Minister for Public Transport, Matthew Guy, says they’re an important part of a special heritage precinct.

“What we’re talking about is one of Australia’s premier heritage streetscapes which is Lydiard Street, and from that station looking down you see the facades of the buildings [and] it is something quite magnificent and those railway gates are a part of it,” he said.
