Wendouree MP Juliana Addison says she’s already spoken to the Minister for Regional Development to see what can be done to support the Regent Cinema and its staff.

The 100-year-old business turned off its projectors on Monday night in a move that has shocked the Ballarat community.

Ms. Addison says its closure shouldn’t become a political football in relation to parking.

“I’ve never been contacted by Steve Anderson or anyone at The Regent to talk about parking.”

“I think that there’s some people in Ballarat who are trying to politicise this sad day, and I’m a bit ‘shame on you’, this is really tough for the workers, this is a tough day for generations of people in Ballarat who have loved that cinema,” Ms. Addison said.

Meantime, SMB Advisory liquidator Justin Howlett has advised that Regent Entertainment was placed into voluntary liquidation today.

The company employed over 20 staff at the time of its closure.

“Regent Cinemas have been an integral part of Ballarat life for many years, and its closure is a very emotional time for its owners, staff and patrons alike, Mr. Howlett said.

“Whilst it is still early days, a main focus will be to explore all avenues in which the business may be able to reopen, and we are working closely with all major stakeholders and a number of interested parties in this regard,” he said.
