Ballarat mayor Des Hudson has confirmed a Kings Caveat on the former saleyards site has been lifted.
The restriction, first implemented in 1886, meant the site could be used as a sale yard again.
Ballarat’s new sale yard complex is now operating near Miners Rest.

Mr. Hudson says it’s a very significant site.
“With the Kings Caveat being removed, and the Government will commit to doing further remediation works, some drainage and other infrastructure, I think it gives us an opportunity to look at what is the best use of that site, not only just for now but for the next 50, 60, 70 years,” he said.
