Future looking brighter for Ballarat’s Regent Cinema

Work continues behind the scenes to re-open the iconic Regent Cinemas in Ballarat.

Two weeks ago today, the Regent went into liquidation after operating for almost 100 years, shocking many in the Ballarat community.

The closure left 25 staff without jobs.

SMB Advisory liquidator Justin Howlett says the building’s owners are keen to see it continue to operate as a cinema.

“We’re dealing with a number of parties who have the ability and interest in acquiring the cinema assets,” he said.

“What can make my job extremely difficult is having an uncooperative landlord or premises owner, but what we’ve got here is it’s in the family unit still [and] the owners are happy to assist in the process.”
