Ballarat lobby group Save Our Station says it believes the fight to get Lydiard Street’s heritage railway gates re-installed operationally is now lost.
In May of 2020, a train crashed into the over 140-year-old wooden gates, with temporary boom gates installed in its place.
The group says late Friday, Heritage Victoria issued a permit for the interlocking gates to not be reinstated in an operational capacity, instead placed in a static display.
President of Save Our Station, Gerald Jenzen, says they don’t have the resources for a court battle.
“We certainly can’t afford to go off to court and challenge the decision once it’s been made,” he said.
“It’s the same with the overpass. That decision has been made, and work has started, so one would assume something will happen fairly soon.”
