The heritage Lydiard Street railway gates could soon return to its original position.
In 2020, a V/Line passenger train collided with the gates, with its surviving parts put into storage.
Last month, it was announced an application to keep the salvaged gates in place next to the new electronic boom gates had been lodged with Heritage Victoria.
It followed community feedback on level crossing options saw 93 per cent of respondent’s support or not opposing retaining the mechanical barriers at the crossing and placing them in a static position.
However, at tonight’s planning meeting, Ballarat council officers will recommend the gates should be repaired and rebuilt and return to operation.
They say the gate system is an important part of the station’s interlocked installation.
