The Australian Workers Union says it told the operators of the Golden Plains Wind Farm they had serious safety concerns, almost two weeks before a fatal incident at the site.

Yesterday morning, a man was killed at Rokewood, south of Ballarat, after being crushed by one of the turbines enormous blades.

The AWU’s state secretary Ronnie Hayden says the death could have been prevented.

Speaking to Seven News, he said their delegates met with wind farm management a week and a half ago, and said it was ‘just dumb luck’ that nobody had died at work yet.

In a statement, wind turbine manufacturer and installer Vestas says the site has been closed and they’re working with the authorities to investigate what happened.

They say they’re devastated for the worker’s family and the team building the wind farm and will be doing everything it can to support them.

Worksafe is now investigating with a report being prepared for the coroner.
