Despite some members of the Buninyong community saying the plan is ‘over the top’, the City of Ballarat has advertised a design tender for the reconstruction of the Gong Reservoir dam wall.
Council says the Gong wall was not constructed to required standards and the leaking wall was identified as a public safety risk in 2019.
City of Ballarat Deputy Mayor, Cr Ben Taylor says the reconstruction project is an essential investment in Buninyong’s future, protecting the Botanic Gardens, the bowling club and private residences from flooding.
“2023 in July council did make a decision voting 8-1 to go ahead and get on with the Gong wall and rehabilitate and fix it.”
“And then again just this year we’ve done that again, back through the chamber and the vote went 7-2 to get on with it, so this is the next stage,” Cr Taylor said.
