Ballarat tops the billion-dollar visitor economy mountain

For the first time tourists have spent $1 billion in the Ballarat region.

New data out for March shows the visitor economy hitting the magic billion-dollar mark over the last 12 months

Tourism Midwest Victoria board member Katrina Nitschke, who is also the Deputy CEO of Sovereign Hill, says its reward for effort.

“What we are seeing is that we are starting to recover, we are starting to see that growth.”

“We’re one of the only regions that is seeing that annualised growth as a positive, some of the other regions are starting to shrink a little bit in their growth rates.”

“But we continue to see real growth, real intention to visit and people coming and spending their money in our region,” Ms. Nitschke said.

One of Ballarat’s key tourism drivers the Winter Festival finishes this Sunday.
