Ballarat police officers walk off the job over pay and conditions

Ballarat police officers will walk off the job for half an hour today, as they call for fairer pay and conditions.

Police Association members are seeking a six per cent pay rise per annum over four years and an end to unpaid work.

The job stoppage follows similar actions at the Victoria Police Centre on Friday, where around 1,000 members stopped work outside the building.

Police say they’re frustrated by the Government’s unwillingness to negotiate a fair pay rise and end wage-theft from police at the beginning and end of every shift.

Victoria Police has applied to the Fair Work Commission to have the dispute over the enterprise bargaining agreement declared intractable and have the Fair Work Commission determine the financial and working future of police and PSO’s.

Secretary of the Police Association of Victoria, Wayne Gatt, says both the State Government and Victoria Police Command need to come to the table to resolve the issue.

“Imagine if police officers ran away from difficult situations, difficult conversations or challenging circumstances when things got tough,” he said.

“Come to the table, talk to your police, show your capacity to lead in government and get on with this and help us get on with keeping the community safe.”
