Ballarat councillors will be asked tomorrow night to vote on launching an appeal against a Heritage Victoria permit to restore the historic Lydiard Street railway gates in a static fashion only.
The permit also allows for the introduced mechanical boom gates to remain indefinitely.
The appeal will come with a financial cost however, estimated to be somewhere between $10,000 and $15,000.

Expert advice will add another $10,000, with up to $35,000 also needed for legal counsel.
A train crashed into the over 140-year-old wooden gates in May of 2020, with boom gates installed in its place.
