The work of select indigenous artists, who are currently in prison, will be on display at the Post Office Gallery in Ballarat from today.
Many of the inmates from Langi Kal Kal and Hopkins Correctional Centre have never painted before but have just completed a certificate in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural arts.
Curator of the gallery, Shelley Hinton, says the visual arts activities have been successful for rehabilitation.
“From a creative perspective, for indigenous artists it is very much about rehabilitation in terms of their self-esteem and re-identifying themselves with their own kin,” she said.
The 35 pieces will be on display until July 9.
