A liquor giant has been refused a licence to operate in Daylesford.
In 2022, Endeavour Group were proposing to open a Dan Murphy’s store in the town and applied to the Victorian Liquor Commission for a packaged liquor licence.
After objections from a number of people in the community, the commission yesterday rejected the application on the grounds that granting the licence could be conducive or encourage harm, in particular to minors.
The Hepburn Shire Council has welcomed the decision.
In a statement, CEO Bradley Thomas said council strongly advocated for the refusal during the submission process and at hearings.
He said it’s a landmark decision, as this is the first time the definition of ‘harm’ under the Liquor Control Reform Act has been used to refuse a liquor licence.
