Yesterday’s ANZAC Day dawn service crowd in Ballarat has been estimated to be one of the biggest ever.
The prediction, made by Mayor Des Hudson, came after the morning’s service at the Ballarat Cenotaph, one of several around the city.
Chair of the Ballarat ANZAC Day committee, Andrew Hamilton, says it would be very close, if not the biggest.
“The Mayor would know [because] he’s been at a few, and the President of the RSL said the same thing,” he said.
“It was a really good turnout, especially considering [there was] a bit of drizzle and a bit of cold weather.”
Mr. Hamilton said it was great young people came out to the service.
“We have a reading from Major Robert Powell that hit some pertinent points about peacekeeping, and it teaches the young that it’s not about just going overseas and trying to destroy things,” he said.
“We don’t want war, we want peace.”
