The Committee for Ballarat has raised concerns about the future of the city’s Sleep Bus.
In 2023, $100,000 was raised by the community for a bus, which provides safe, overnight accommodation for locals experiencing homelessness.
However, in January it was announced the Sleep Bus operation would be winding down later this year, with an estimated $15,000 extra needed to finish the build.
CEO of the Committee for Ballarat, Michael Poulton, says if they were to raise further money, they’d want a contract in place to ensure the bus is delivered.
“You can understand there’s a little bit of concern in the Ballarat community who’ve showed enormous generosity in funding the bus to this point, but we have not had the outcome that we’ve been seeking,” he said.
“We now have the situation to provide more money to complete the bus or we get the bus and complete [it] ourselves.”
Radio Ballarat contacted Sleep Bus in February over the future of the Ballarat build but received no response.
