The AFL’s Opening Round in Queensland has been thrown into disarray, with Tropical Cyclone Alfred forcing the league to postpone two highly anticipated games.
- Lions vs Cats at the Gabba was set for Thursday night but is now likely rescheduled for Round 3, during both teams’ bye weeks.
- Suns vs Bombers at People First Stadium faces a trickier challenge, with no shared byes between the teams. This might push the game into 2025.
On social media the AFL has stated that “Thursday night’s season opener between the Lions and Cats and Saturday’s game between the Suns and Dons will be rescheduled.
Following ongoing communication with the Queensland Government, the Bureau of Meteorology and Stadiums Queensland, the decision has been made to ensure the health and safety of everyone in and around any potential cyclone zones.”
Safety clearly at the forefront of thinking to postpone both Queensland games.

From a footy view, it means Brandon Starcevich (concussion) back for Brisbane’s first game, Bailey Smith (knee) not in doubt for Rd1, Mac Andrew/Charlie Ballard/Lachie Weller an extra week to be fit. https://t.co/JTv5GSvpz5
Most agree it was the right decision, though some social commentators are questioning why it took so long to be made.
With school closures, transport disruptions, and potential flight cancellations looming, making the call earlier could have saved travel plans and accommodation costs.
For now, AFL footy fans will have to wait until calmer skies to kick off the season.
