The Deputy Mayor of the Northern Grampians Shire says a lot of work is currently going on behind the scenes to ensure the bush fire ravaged community can secure larger Disaster Recovery Grants.
To date just over 40 ‘category A’ grants have been paid however three larger categories require the state government to ask Canberra for help.
Cr Justine Hide says council officers are looking into the cost of the fire so they can present the Premier with the numbers.
“We are working behind the scenes in the relevant areas to just try and push that funding from what it’s at currently up to potentially a category C or D which could provide greater support.”
“At the moment the funding that has been released is quite narrow, it isn’t really helping the majority of the small businesses here,” Deputy Mayor Hide said.
Meantime, there are more bush fire concerns for residents of Halls Gap and the Grampians today.
Forest Fire Management Victoria have issued a ‘watch and act leave now’ message due to a fire in the national park at Boroka Track to the west of Halls Gap.
Authorities say there is no threat to the township however you should leave the track immediately.
