A Ballarat man celebrated his 500th blood and plasma donation in the city today.
Alan Hawkes made his first donation with work colleagues back in November 1968 and its estimated he could have saved up to 1,500 lives over almost 56 years.
Alan made the donation just after lunch today with his daughter, who also gave blood.
“I worked at a place called Eureka Valves back in those days which is no longer around, I was an apprentice turner and fitter there.”
“I don’t know how it came about but a group of us went to donate blood, and we just sought of kept going,” Mr. Hawkes said.
There are currently more than 100 appointments available in Ballarat to donate blood over the next 7 days.
