The State Government is planning to return heritage gates to the Lydiard Street railway crossing.
After a train slammed into the gates in 2020, they were put into storage and electronic boom gates were instead installed at the crossing.
An application with Heritage Victoria has now been lodged to keep the heritage gates static next to the new electronic gates.
In 2023, community feedback on options for the level crossing saw 93 per cent of respondents support or not opposing retaining the mechanical barriers at the crossing and placing them in a static position.
V/Line and the Department of Transport and Planning also investigated the possibility of returning the gates to its previous functional capacity.
This was determined not to be a viable option long-term.
