A Ballarat councillor will aim to limit future motions that refer to broader state, federal and international issues.
The notice of motion, put up by councillor Ben Taylor, refers to matters that are outside the powers of council and lack a clear connection to ratepayers.
It comes after a controversial motion last month by Belinda Coates, asking councillors to back a letter to the PM that advocated for a cease fire in the Gaza conflict.
Cr. Taylor says the motion won’t limit discussions of bigger issues in the future.
“That’s why we have the different levels of government. The role of State and Federal Governments is to deal with those matters,” he said.
“That’s how the role of the Government should work where [the] community go to those areas and not go down to the areas that are not within their scope.”
