A group of 11 community health organisations, which includes Ballarat Community Health, have called for a radical shift in disaster response programs.
The Alliance of Rural and Regional Community Health are pushing for a new permanent Community Recovery and Resilience program in disaster-prone regions.
The program would establish a permanent trauma-based workforce across regional Victoria to support disaster recovery at the local level.
It comes after last week’s devastating fires in the Grampians region and storms in the Gippsland area.
Executive member of the Alliance, Greg Little, says currently the community recovery starts from scratch each time.
