Around 50 people came together yesterday to celebrate the renaming of Jim Crow Creek to Larni Barramal Yaluk.

The former name is associated with racial segregation, whilst the new name means ‘the creek that flows through the home or dreaming place of the emu’.

At the creekbank at Franklinford, Dja Dja Warrung community members, council members and other representatives attended, with a smoking ceremony performed at the site.

CEO of the Dja Dja Warrung Group, Rodney Carter, said in a statement the old name memorialized a sorry chapter in our shared history.

He said bringing a Dja Dja Wurrung presence back to Country is significant for his people’s health and wellbeing.
