At least one Ballarat councillor believes this week’s decision by the Department of Transport (DoT) to not restore the Lydiard Street rail gates in a working capacity is the right one.

The community is now being asked if they want the static gates placed near the crossing or somewhere else in the station precinct.

Speaking to Radio Ballarat today Cr Peter Eddy says it’s a compromise that needed to be made.

“Do you want transport, do you want more people, you know you can’t always have everything you want.”

“I just think it’s one of those things, we just need a sensible compromise that actually maintains that sense of heritage,” Cr Eddy said.

The replica heritage gates were smashed by an out-of-control V/Line train in May 2020.
