The Ballarat Botanic Garden has shown its commitment to the environment, and not just the one inside its gates.
The City of Ballarat has reduced the use of chemicals for pest management by 70% thanks to a new approach.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) helps manage pests in less harmful ways and foregoes relying on chemical spraying.
“The City of Ballarat is striving to ensure the delicate balance of the local ecosystem is maintained,” said Mayor Cr Des Hudson.
“That’s why the city is actively seeking ways to reduce chemical usage and promote sustainable practices, particularly in our gardens.”

Council also employs other IPM methods including adjusting planting location, using cultivation techniques, installing pest traps and destroying pest food sources.
